A quick free look at our Version 4 Workbook, based on Bernina's V4 Software

(Already decided?  Here's how to order)

We want to introduce you to our workbook for Version 4.  This workbook was written and distributed literally all over the world several years ago when V4 was the current version of Bernina's software.

It is a companion which we wrote with the idea that we were standing over your shoulder and guiding you as to how to get thru the basics.

Berninas' V4 is no longer sold at dealerships and the classes in how to use it are few and far between.  There were many times when dealerships were giving classes that they purchased our workbook to use as their class guides.

Below are tastes which will give you a good idea about whether or not you'd like to purchase a copy for yourself.  There are 52 chapters totaling about 342 pages.

Lesson 1: Dongles and More Dongles…Wherein We Help You install this program

Computer gurus, Mr. Rubic and his cube, and the developer of the Federal Government’s organizational chart will have no problem installing this program. We mortals, however, can use a little extra help.

As writers of this workbook, we have to cover 4 different installation procedures. You, however, only have to read the procedure that applies to you, unless you are a disciple of the Marque de Sade, in which case read all of them, twice.

First, identify which situation in the following table most closely describes your situation, and then go to the pages indicated.

Decision Time Table

My computer presently has Version 1, 2, or 3 installed on it.

I own a Bernina 200

Installation of the Version 4.0 Update artista embroidery software.

When you open your software package, you will find: Instruction books, a registration form, support notes, installation notes, quick reference guide, software installation CD, a blue USB security key—referred to as a dongle, and a 9 pin cable.

Place the Parallel Port Security Dongle you own for version 1, 2, or 3 on your computer.

Place the installation CD in the computer and proceed to install the software. You do not have to uninstall your previous version software. If you accept the default folder for program installation, the previous version will be uninstalled and replaced with the new updated version.

Part of the installation process is to have you shut down your computer; follow these instructions!

When your computer reboots, it will ask you to place the USB dongle on your computer. The program will then verify the USB dongle and finish installing.

The new USB dongle will "drain the brain" of the old parallel dongle and it can be thrown away because it will no longer run the software. It is useless…won’t work again…

The program is now ready to use.

If you own a Bernina 200, you will connect your Bernina and computer using the USB cable that was included with your Bernina 200 when you purchased it. You will NOT need the 9 pin serial cable that came with the software for the Bernina 200 connection.

Place the "square" end of the USB cable in the socket on the Bernina 200. Place the thin parallel connection into the USB port on your computer or powered USB hub. A powered hub gets its power from plugging it into an electrical outlet, and does not run off the power of the computer.

Lesson 4: Opening a Design.

We’ve now reviewed some of the basics of operating the program and are ready to start exploring the wonderful options the Bernina Artista Designer has waiting for you.

In this lesson you are going to learn how to open an existing design. It’s easy, but you have to follow the proper steps.

As with many things you do with this program, there are several ways to arrive at your goal. For example there is more than one way to open a design. Why? Because everyone approaches their computer differently. Some folks use shortcut keys, others like to use menus.

You can click the Open Icon Button on the general toolbar.

You can also open a design by clicking File on the drop down menu. Then click Open

OR

Press and hold down the Ctrl Key on your keyboard and then press the "O" to open a design.

Usually, the Open Dialogue box will open to the

My Designs Folder.

If your screen doesn’t open to the My Designs folder automatically,

Look in My Computer>Local Disk (C:).

Then find the My Designs folder. Click Open or left double click to open this folder.

The folder/file view of the dialogue box is a list of the folders and designs in the My Designs folder.

Open Samples 4 folder.

The Airplane Design is highlighted in the list and a preview is shown at the right side of the dialogue box. This preview shows ONLY if the box beside preview in the bottom right hand corner is checked. Below the airplane preview is information about the design.

The File name: Airplane

Files of Type: Artista designs (you can open numerous design formats in artista software—more on that later).

Touch the arrows on your keyboard to scroll through the designs.

Choose the Rooster design.

Opening options are:

1. Click Open

2. Enter on the Keyboard 3. Double click on Rooster.

Click the 1:1 Icon to see the actual size of the Rooster when embroidered.

Before you send the design to your embroidery unit, you should change the hoop to the type your machine uses.

Right click on the hoop icon on the general toolbar.

The Options dialogue box opens.

You can scroll through the LONG list of hoop options and choose the one you need.

Choose the hoop you want to use and then click the OK button.

When you return to the screen, you can see if the hoop works with the design you have chosen.

You can then scale the design to work with the hoop if you really want to use that one, or go back to the hoop list and choose a different hoop….Make sure it is a hoop that actually works with your embroidery machine.

In the example the rooster is too large to fit in the medium sized hoop. I could select the design and scale it down, OR go back and choose the large hoop and not alter my design.

You are now ready to send the design to your embroidery unit to sew.

Click the Sewing Machine Icon on the general toolbar.

OR

Go to the Drop Down Menu and Click on File.

Click Card/Machine Write…

You can choose to send the design to the embroidery system to stitch out or send it to the embroidery module memory. Another option is to send the design to a Personal Design Card for the artista 165, 170, 180, or 185 or a Personal PCMCIA card for the artista 200.

Lesson 5: Creating Folders for your Designs

Lesson 32: Diamond Monograms

Level: Editor, AutoDesigner, Designer Plus

This Lesson uses the Metric Measurement System.

You are going to create monograms in this exercise, using the Diamond 2 and Diamond 3 alphabet styles. These are designed specifically for monograms and are quick and easy to do.

You can either use your keyboard and type in upper and lower case letters plus symbols on the design screen or in the text box in the Object Properties—Lettering dialogue box. You can also go to the Object Properties—Lettering dialogue box and use the Select Character option.

We’ll try both methods here so you can get acquainted with them.

Press the A on your keyboard. The Object Properties—Lettering dialogue box will open.

Select the Diamond2 Alphabet.

The recommended size for Diamond2 and Diamond3 alphabets:

No smaller than .7 inches or 18mm.

No larger than 4 inches or 100 mm.

Height>50mm

Click OK.

When you are back on the design screen, left click the Alphabet Icon.

Click on the screen where you want to place the monogram.

For this example the monogram has the letters CS.

Type in the C in upper case letters (the first initial is always typed in upper case).

Type in the s in lower case letters (the second letter is always typed in lower case).

There are two types of brackets on your keyboard .

Pressing this bracket key [ will give you this frame .

Pressing this bracket key ] will give you this frame

Press the [ on the keyboard.

Press Enter. Change the color to C15 black.

File>Save as>CS Monogram. Close.

Now let’s try using the Select Character option in the Object Properties—Lettering box.

Open a new page.

Press the A on the keyboard.

The Object Properties—Lettering box will open.

Select Alphabet>Diamond2

Height:>75.00 mm

Click the Select Character…box.

The Select Character box opens. How to order

The Alphabet Set is Diamond2.

The box is pressed to see both the letter and the symbol representing the letter.

You can use the scroll button on the side to see both the left and right alphabets. The first set shows the letter with the right side low and the left side angling up. The second set shows the letter with the right side of the letter high and the left side slanting down. This forms the diamond shape of the lettering. The brackets are located between the two sets of letters.

Our example uses the monogram JE. You should scroll to the first alphabet and click on J.

Then scroll to the second alphabet and click on e.

Then click the frame with the ] underneath it.

The selection window will look like this.

Click Ok to leave the Select Character box. Click OK to leave the Object Properties—Lettering box. How to order

When you return to the design screen, click in the center of the screen.

Change the color of the lettering to C15.

File>Save As>JE Monogram

Close.

Diamond3 alphabet uses the same procedure for creating monograms. There is a 3rd set of symbols added for the middle initial which would be used for the last name initial.

The left hand letter is typed in using Uppercase.

The center letter (last name initial) is typed in using the symbol listed below the letter.

The right hand letter is typed in using lower case.

Add the frame using either the [ or ] brackets.

You can use the Select Character box…for easy access to the lettering from the Object Properties—Lettering box.

Try a Diamond3 monogram.

CSM will be the initials used in this exercise.

Open a new page in the artista software.

Press the A on the keyboard.

Select Alphabet>Diamond3.

Change the Height>100mm.

Select Character…

The middle initial (last name initial) is shown first in the list. Scroll past this first set and move to the second set.

Click to select the C.

There is a C in the uppercase under the box.

Scroll back up to the first set of letters.

Click the S. It has a 3 under the box and this symbol will show in the selection box.How to order

Scroll down to the last set of letters. Find the M and click it. It will show as a lower case m in the Selection: window.

Scroll back up to the frames.

Click the frame style with the [ underneath it.

The selection box will show the 3 initials and the frame.

Click OK.

You will return to the Object Properties—Lettering box.

Click OK.

Click in the middle of the design screen.

The monogram will process.

Change the color to C15.

File>Save as>CSM monogram

Lesson 48 : Stippling a Design Area

Level: Designer Plus

This Lesson uses the Metric Measurement System.

Most people who are using this program and who have quilted are familiar with the method of machine quilting that uses a straight stitch to meander over the surface to be quilted. Most of you do it free motion. Some of you who owned version 3.0 software probably got very good at using a single outline stitch and creating your own stipple quilting. And then along came Version 4.0 Bernina Embroidery Software and what does it have? Automatic Stippling!!! And it’s so easy.

The Stippling is done in two stages. First you digitize a Single Angled Step Filled area with either the Closed curve tool or the Rectangle Tool. It will not work with a shape digitized with the Circle tool. Next you select the Step Filled area and click the Stipple Tool. You then choose the stitch length and the loop spacing and you have a stipple filled area.

You will begin this exercise by a sampler of squares filled with stipple stitch of different values.

Open the Bernina Embroidery Software.

Open a new design page.

Click the Rectangle Tool.

Fill stitch>Step.

Click in the bottom left corner of the area that will become a square or rectangle.

Make the square fill a 6x6 grid area.

When you click in the top right corner, the square will fill with step stitches.  How to order

Copy the square. Paste it 3 times and place the squares in the hoop like our sample.

Click the Select Object Tool.

Select Square 1.

Click the Stipple Fill Tool.

The Stipple Box opens.

Here you decide the stitch length and the loop spacing.

Don’t change anything for this first square. Click OK.

The square fills will stipple stitch.

Select Square 2.

Click the Stipple Fill Tool.

The Stipple Box opens.

Leave the Stitch Length at 2.0 mm.

Change the Loop Spacing to 4.0 mm.
